Mr. John H. Newell Sr.

On Monday, October 29, 2018, John H. Newell, Sr., 77, of McCandless, passed away peacefully at home with his loving family by his side. John lost the battle with a very aggressive cancer. John was born in Stahlstown on March 23, 1941. He was a graduate of Ligonier Valley High School and the University of Pittsburgh. John married Linda on July 15, 1967 and they spent 51 years together enjoying their time, living abroad and around the country as he worked at IBM and they raised a family together. They lived in Maryland, Germany, Kentucky, and New Jersey before settling in Pittsburgh, where they lived happily for the past 41 years. John was an avid golfer for many years and enjoyed his long-time membership at Oakmont Country Club. More recently, he enjoyed riding his new bike, writing letters to the editor of the local newspapers, and watching all of his grandchildren play hockey, softball, baseball, and basketball (but not really soccer). He enjoyed his annual trips to the beach with his family in Topsail, NC and loved watching a good storm over the ocean. Having just retired in June, he was looking forward to traveling more with his wife, and brother-in-law and sister-in-law (and lifelong friends), Frank and Joanne Chew. John is survived by his wife, Linda (Pignetti) of Pittsburgh, three children, and five grandchildren. Father of John H. (Valerie) Newell, Jr. of Export, Lance W. Newell of Pittsburgh, and Brooke (John) Ebken of Pittsburgh. Proud “Papa” to Tyler, Ben, Jake, Mercy and Nolan. John was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Phyllis Newell and brother Richard Newell. He is survived by his three brothers and many nieces and nephews; brother of Harold (Edith) Newell of Ligonier, Frank (Shirley) Newell of Stahlstown, and Robert (Peggy) Newell of Ligonier. Brother-in-law of John (Mardie) Pignetti of Greensburg. Friends and family will be received Friday, November 2, 2018 from 1-3 and 6-8 p.m. at Simons Funeral Home, Inc., 7720 Perry Hwy, Pgh, PA 15237. Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday, November 3, 2018 at 11:00 am in Saint John Neumann Church, 2230 Rochester Road, Pgh, PA 15237.
