Joanna Dominick

Joanna Dominick, of McCandless Township, formerly of Scottsdale, Arizona, 94, went into the loving arms of her Lord on November 23, 2015 She was born June 16, 1921, daughter of late Charles and Candita (Erario) Calo. She was a graduate St. Raphael’s High School in Morningside, PA. She entered the convent, but left for health reasons and later met and married her husband of 65 years, the late Armand Dominick. She was preceded in death by her brother's Samuel Calo, Salvatore Calo, Anthony Calo, Vincent (Jim) Calo. Survived by sister's Lena Sonetti and Dolores (Gilbert) Fucile. They had four children, Virginia Pelly, Candace (John) Bardyn, A. Joseph (Yvonne), William (Cindie). Joanna was the proud grandmother to nine grandchildren, Jennifer (Joseph) Katzfey, Michelle (Michael) Repasky, Jay Pelly, Tina (Floyd) Eicher, Ashley (Frank) Direnzo, Amanda Dominick, Alicia Dominick, Marissa Dominick, Michael Dominick, and 10 great grandchildren whom she adored, Haley, Kelsey, Ryan, and Madisyn Katzfey, Hannah, Katherine, Ava, and Maria Repasky, Domenico DiRenzo, and Natalia Eicher. She will be lovingly remembered by her entire family, as well as her many friends. Joanna was an active member of her church, and contributed substantially to many Catholic relief efforts and charities, including Catholic Charities, Society of the Little Flower, and many others. She worked at Gimbles and Otto Milk in Pittsburgh, and later moved with her husband and youngest son to Phoenix, Arizona, where she worked for Mountain Bell as a secretary. She was a kind soul that was loved by so many. Her love of cooking was shared with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Her sauce, ravioli, and gnocchi were legendary, and her love of cards infectious. She taught us many games, including her favorites, Shanghi poker and Canasta, which will not be the same without her. She had a love of gardening and had the magic touch with plants, many people would bring sick plants to her to bring back to life. Joanna battled many illnesses in her life, including Rheumatic fever, Rheumatoid arthritis, and multiple bouts of Non-Hodgkins lymphoma, and heart disease. She constantly battled back and was an example and living miracle to those who saw her determination, persistence, and vigor for life. The family wishes to offer a special thanks to all of the doctors, nurses, and caregivers who helped her over the years, especially Drs. Koman and Kimmel. Friends will be welcome from 1-3, 6-8 pm on Tuesday, December 1 at SIMONS FUNERAL HOME, Perry Highway. Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 am, Wednesday, St. Teresa of Avila Church, Perry Highway, North Hills. In lieu of flowers, consider a donation to Little Sisters of the Poor or Catholic Charities.
