Mrs. Fay Ellis Howell

“And whatever you do or say, do it as a representative of The Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father.” Colossians 3:17 (NLT) Fay Ellis Howell was born on August 3, 1929 in Concord, NH to parents, Edward and Jesse Ellis. Fay was first introduced to the The Salvation Army when she was invited to join the Sunbeams and attend Sunday School at the Corps. Since Fay and her family were practicing Baptists, her parents were hesitant at first but finally allowed Fay to attend Salvation Army activities. Fay eventually broke away from the Baptist church and became a Junior Soldier of The Salvation Army. She loved The Army and the Lord with all her heart, and at the age of fourteen during Youth Councils in Laconia, NH, she accepted Jesus Christ as her own personal Savior. In September 1952, Fay answered her Call to ordained ministry as an Officer and entered the School for Officer Training. Her instructors commented, “She is a warm hearted, loyal and sincere Salvationist. Her testimony is definite and her Call to service in The Salvation Army is most important to her.” Fay was commissioned (ordained) on June 15, 1953 with the Heralds Session and was appointed to Berwick, PA Corps, and then to Carbondale, PA Corps in 1954. On November 22, 1954, Fay married 2 nd Lieutenant Raymond Howell. Fay and Raymond spent the next 39 years in active ministry nurturing those in need. Together, they touched and changed the lives of thousands through their dedication and extraordinary vision for the Men’s Social Service Department (ARC). In 1993, Mrs. Lt Colonel Fay Howell retired from her last appointment as Women’s Services Director (ARC Command) along with her husband, Lt Colonel Raymond Howell who served as ARC Commander. Their shared ministry continues to flourish and improve the lives of many. After 63 years of marriage and a life filled with love and service, Lt. Colonel Raymond Howell was Promoted to Glory on September 23, 2017. Mrs. Lt Colonel Fay Howell is now reunited with her husband, Ray, and together they stand in the presence of their Lord and Savior. Fay is survived by her three children: Raymond Howell and his wife Robin Schindler of New York, NY; Susan (Howell) Pappalardo and her husband Thomas of Ben Avon, PA; and Laurie (Howell) Hodges and her husband Michael of Andover, MA. In addition, she is survived by five grandchildren: Raymond Schindler-Howell; Linnea (Pappalardo) Koval, her husband Michael and their three children, Henry, Jackson, and Elizabeth; Joanna (Pappalardo) Davis, her husband Justin, and their two children Theodore and Oliver; and Emma and Sally Hodges. May the comfort of our Heavenly Father surround the Howell family and give them strength in the days ahead. A Celebration of Fay’s life will take place on Saturday, March 2, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at The Salvation Army, Old Orchard Beach Corps, 2 Sixth Street, Old Orchard Beach, ME. Burial will be private.
